More Than Half of US Handset Shipments Will be Smartphones by 2012

The demand for advanced mobile handsets that contain significant processing power, robust memory, large screens, and open operating systems has dominated the mobile phone market for the past several years. Smartphones will continue to dominate into the future. In-Stat (www.in-stat.com) forecasts that unit shipments of smartphones will be nearly 850 million by 2015, as they move toward the 1 billion shipment mark. “There are several critical factors that drive smartphone success,” says Allen Nogee, Principal Analyst. “These include a powerful browser, a wide variety of apps, an easy to navigate user interface, and a good keyboard or touch screen. Additionally, other intangible attributes, such as being ‘fashionable’ and that ‘your friends have one’ are important.”

Recent In-Stat research found:

* More than half of US handset shipments will be smartphones by 2012.

* Android is maintaining its momentum and will continue to be the leading OS. The demise of Symbian has been greatly overstated. On a global basis, annual unit shipments of Symbian-based handsets will continue to grow, resulting in Symbian having the second highest unit shipments of all the smartphone OSs.

* The smartphone OS war is heating up, as relatively new or renewed entrants such as MeeGo, Bada, WebOS, and others join a very crowded market.

* By 2015, over two thirds of smartphones will still be WCDMA-based. LTE smartphones will comprise only a small minority of annual handset shipments, even in 2015.

* The display and baseband/apps processor are the two high cost items in the bill of materials. Other significant items include memory, camera, software and licensing, and case and manufacturing.

Huawei Files Lawsuit Against Motorola for IP Infringement

Huawei Technologies, Co., Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today asked a U.S. District Court to prevent Motorola from illegally transferring Huawei's intellectual property (IP) to Nokia Siemens Networks ("NSN"). Huawei took this action as NSN seeks to complete its US$1.2 billion acquisition of Motorola's wireless network business.

Since 2000, Huawei and Motorola have had a cooperative relationship in the radio access network and core network businesses, where Motorola has resold Huawei wireless network products to customers under the Motorola name. During this period, Motorola was provided with products and confidential Huawei IP developed by Huawei's team of more than 10,000 engineers.

Since the July 2010 announcement by NSN of its purchase of Motorola's wireless network business, Huawei has tried to ensure that Motorola does not transfer this confidential information to NSN. Motorola, however, has not responded with assurances that it will prevent disclosure of that information to NSN. If Huawei's proprietary commercial property and information is transferred to a third party, Huawei will suffer irreparable commercial damage.

Motorola's failure to adopt measures sufficient to ensure that Huawei's proprietary information remains confidential has compelled the company to file for the appropriate legal protection of its rights.

Verizon backs off $30 unlimited data plan for iPhone

Verizon backs off $30 unlimited data plan for iPhone
poured some gas onto the iPhone fire Tuesday morning when it announced that it would offer the same $30 unlimited data plan for the iPhone as it offers for all of its other smartphones.

But by Tuesday afternoon, the company updated its announcement and backpedaled, saying it would only offer the unlimited iPhone data plan "for a limited time." Those who get in during the window will have unlimited data on their iPhones throughout the life of their Verizon contract.

The company declined to comment on how long the temporary unlimited offer would last. But it said that after the initial period, it will move to a metered system similar to the one used by AT&T (T, Fortune 500), which makes its smartphone customers pay for the amount of data they consume.

In June, AT&T slashed the starting prices of its data plans, but also added caps to them and eliminated its unlimited plan. AT&T customers now pay $15 a month for 250 megabytes of monthly data, or $25 for 2 gigabytes and an additional $10 for each gigabyte of monthly data usage that exceeds the allotted 2 GB limit.

So even though the cheapest available monthly iPhone voice plus data plan on AT&T is $54.99, compared to $69.99 on Verizon, customers that download 2.1 GB of data on their iPhones will pay $69.99 if they have Verizon -- compared to $74.99 on AT&T. For a limited time, anyway.

That's not so hard to do: If you want to watch Netflix (NFLX) on your iPhone using a mobile connection, 2 GB only gets you between six and 12 hours of streaming movies and TV shows, depending on the bit rate.

When it unveiled its iPhone earlier this month, Verizon Wireless declined to discuss the phone's data plan pricing. That fueled speculation that Verizon would go the way of AT&T and introduce a tiered plan, ditching the all-you-can-eat option.

Early Tuesday, the company seemed to recognize that would be a competitive mistake.
0:00 /01:05Subscribers pile on Verizon

"I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot," Lowell McAdam, Verizon's chief operating officer, told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. He said that moving towards a tiered data plan would reduce the number of iPhone customers that would defect from rival AT&T.

Sony Reveals New Hand-Held Device and PlayStation Games for Phones

Sony  will start selling a new hand-held game device by the end of the year and will offer its PlayStation games on a range of portable devices, including smartphones, the company said on Thursday.

Sony, the Japanese electronics and entertainment company, is fighting to hold its ground in a market being transformed by longtime rivals, like Nintendo, and those beyond the traditional game world, like Apple, whose iPhone has fast become the most popular device for casual, downloadable games.

Sony’s new device, code-named NGP for Next Generation Portable, comes packed with new-generation technology: with a touch pad on the front and rear — a first for a game device — a 5-inch LED screen, two sets of button controls, motion sensors, cameras on the front and back and 3G network access. The console will also use a new proprietary memory card designed to thwart piracy. By the end of the year, Sony will also make some PlayStation games available on certified portable devices, including smartphones running Google’s Android operating system, the company’s game chief, Kazuo Hirai, announced Thursday in Tokyo.

A new software platform, PlayStation Suite, will essentially act like Apple’s App store, allowing users of various devices to download PlayStation games, Mr. Hirai said. Sony also hopes to attract independent developers to make games for the platform, he said.

“It is Sony’s first cross-platform endeavor,” said Mr. Hirai, who is president of Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony’s game arm. “The possibilities to produce new kinds of entertainment are endless.”

But Sony did not display its own PlayStation phone, despite rumors and photos of mockups that have circulated on the Internet in recent months. It also did not disclose details like prices or specific release dates for the phone.

When they go on sale, the NGP and the PlayStation phones will face stiff competition.

In February, Nintendo plans to introduce in Japan the 3DS, the next model in its popular DS line of portable game players.

Since they were introduced in 2004, DS devices have outsold Sony’s PlayStation Portable models by more than two to one: 135 million units compared with 62 million units as of September. The 3DS, which can display 3-D graphics without glasses, is in a “category of one,” Nintendo’s chief executive for the United States, Reggie Fils-Aime, said last week. It will go on sale in the United States in March.

Ubiquisys Announces the Attocell

Swindon, UK -- Ubiquisys, the developer of 3G and LTE intelligent cells, today announced the world’s first attocell – a personal femtocell. Designed primarily for people travelling abroad, it enables mobile calls to be made and received as though in their home country. Although developed specifically for the iPhone, the attocell works out of the box with any 3G phone, and has also been tested with Blackberry, Nokia and Android Smartphones. Ubiquisys is already in discussions with several mobile operators about the product.

The attocell connects to a user’s laptop via USB, which provides power and an internet connection. It then analyses the IP address and radio environment to determine which country it is in, and sets its 3G radio power accordingly to below the licenced level. In some countries its range will be just 5mm, in other countries, it could cover a whole room.

Like Ubiquisys femtocells, the attocell continuously monitors its radio environment to ensure that there is zero impact on existing mobile networks. This intelligence, combined with its tiny power output, is likely to make the attocell exempt from regulatory controls and the requirement for type approval

IPhone Hurts Nokia And AT&T

Nokia (NOK) remains by far the world's No. 1 cell phone maker, but it's getting tossed about by Apple (APPL) and Android in the smart-phone market, so it's aiming to reinvent.

AT&T (T) also is moving into a new phase. Its standing as the exclusive U.S. service provider for Apple's iPhone ends on Feb. 10, when archrival Verizon Wireless starts offering the device.

Both Nokia and AT&T released disappointing Q4 results and outlooks early Thursday as they prepare for changes. Nokia shares fell 1.6% while AT&T fell 2.1%.
In a conference call with analysts after Nokia posted results, CEO Stephen Elop spoke of changes.

"Nokia faces some very significant challenges," he said. "The game has changed from a battle of devices to a war of ecosystems," referring to the convergence of mobile and computing devices surrounded by apps and other services.

Apple, with its iPhone, iPad and iPod line of products tethered to its iTunes services and App Store, is the best-performing ecosystem. But devices based on Google's (GOOG) Android operating system also are in the game, as are BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIMM) and others.
Though it beat Q4 earnings and revenue views, its Q1 outlook lagged. For the quarter, Nokia reported revenue of 12.6 billion euro, or $17.3 billion, up 6% and above expectations for 12.4 billion euro. Earnings fell 23% to 0.20 euro, or 27.5 cents, above views for 0.16 euro.
This quarter, Nokia expects sales of mobile devices and services — which accounted for 67% of revenue in Q4 — to be 6.8 billion to 7.3 billion euro.

Best Phones To Import to India

Things aren't as bad as they used to be a decade ago, where any new gadget launched in the West would take ages to appear in the Indian market. Also, when they would appear, they'd generally cost a great deal more than their internationally pricing. This was probably the main reason for the thriving grey market back then.

Not to say that things are perfect now, but it is definitely better than before. Grey market prices for many phones available here aren't substantially lower than the official price. Handsets get launched within a span of a month or two. However, manufacturers are sometimes skeptical about launching a few good phones in the market. This could be because they are not sure if it will do well, or even maybe they think it will kill the market share of other models already selling well in the country.

We have hand-picked five mobile phones that haven't made their way to the Indian soil yet, but are worth importing, especially if you can't hold off your phone purchase any longer. The way you get them here is up to you; you could try everything from asking a relative/friend/acquaintance staying abroad to pick one up for you. If you aren't as lucky, then you could buy it online from sites like eBay or Amazon and get it shipped here. If you don't prefer that, you could go to an electronics shop that deals in importing mobile phones.

The DEFY not only has a desirable shell, but the artillery inside is also fairly equipped. A 3.7-inch 854 x 480 pixel capacitive display (same as the Milestone), an 800 MHz processor and 512MB RAM should keep the Android OS running without a nagging lag. All connectivity features - 3G, Wi-fi, GPS - are there. There's a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash too; the only missing link being its inability to record 720p HD videos (although it records at a smooth 30 fps at VGA res). There's also a secondary mic for noise cancellation during phone-calls.

We've seen the DEFY being sold in the States for as low as USD 360 (Rs. 16,300). Even if you get this phone for even a rupee under Rs. 20,000, we'd say it is a fabulous deal.

Plantronics' Voyager Pro UC Bluetooth Headset Out

The concept of a Bluetooth headset is pretty straight forward. It's a device that allows you to listen to music, and make/receive calls remotely thanks to its wireless connectivity. However, Plantronics went a bit further with its new Voyager Pro UC Bluetooth handset. It has made the new Bluetooth handset a hell lot smarter. This is achieved with what Plantronics dubs as smart sensor technology, which allows the headset to link with devices like phones, laptops and desktops, while incorporating software based features that let the headset interact better with the devices.

The repertoire of smart feature includes 'Auto Answer' that enables the user to answer incoming calls simply by the virtue of wearing the headset. The 'Smart Call Transfer' feature will transfer calls back on the phone if the headset detects that you're no longer wearing it. The' Auto Call Button Lock' prevents accidental dialing by locking the buttons when the headset is not worn.
The Plantronics Voyager PRO UC is priced at $199.95 (Rs. 9,200 approx.) and is out in U.S. The product has no local availability at the moment, but its slated to reach Asian shores sometime in the next month.
